Quick Overview: Top 3 Things Every Ferret Owner Must Know
1. What Do They Eat? (Strict Carnivores)
The Rule: Ferrets are 100% carnivores. They need diets high in animal protein and fat, but very low in carbs and fiber.
Daily Food: Keep a constant supply of high-quality commercial ferret food or premium kitten kibble available. They have lightning-fast metabolisms and need access to food and water 24/7.
Teeth Cleaning: You can offer human-grade raw meaty bones once a week.
⚠️ Danger: Never feed cooked bones. They splinter and cause fatal internal injuries. Avoid pet-grade meats with harmful preservatives, and keep artificial sweeteners (like Xylitol) completely out of reach.
2. Lifespan & Size
Lifespan: With proper indoor care and a healthy diet, domestic ferrets live an impressive 7 to 10+ years.
Size: They grow to about 20 inches long (including the tail). Males are generally larger and heavier than females.
3. Vital Vet & Vaccine Rules
Even if your ferret stays 100% indoors, they must see a vet annually.
Kitten Shots: Vaccinate your baby ferret at 8, 10, and 12 weeks old, then once a year after that for Rabies and Canine Distemper.
⚠️ Crucial Safety Note: Ferrets are highly prone to vaccine reactions. Always stay at the vet’s office for 20 to 30 minutes after any shot just to be safe. Only give one vaccine per visit to prevent adverse side effects.
Why Ferrets Make the Best Pets
The “Two is Better Than One” Secret
Ferrets are incredibly social colony animals. If you adopt two or more ferrets, they actually require less daily effort from you!
They keep each other company while you are at work.
They play, groom, and sleep curled up together.
Instead of demanding constant attention, a pair will happily adapt to your schedule waking up to play whenever you are ready.
They are Highly Intelligent & Pre-Trained
Ferrets have big brains and love to learn. Unlike dogs, you can easily teach an older ferret new tricks!
What We Do: We train our ferrets to use the litter box, recognize their names, and do basic tricks before they leave our care.
What You Can Do: With a little patience, you can easily use puppy-training principles to teach them even more behaviors.
Endless Energy & Playfulness
No pet is more playful than a ferret. They love playing hide-and-seek, darting under furniture, and squeezing through tunnels. To keep them happy:
Provide a large, multi-level cage (similar to a large rabbit enclosure) filled with ramps and toys.
Bonus: When you adopt from us, we provide a free custom secondary cage to help get you started!
